MD:

How can thoughtfully placed artwork impact an employee’s motivation or emotional well-being?

NB:

Surrounding ourselves with beauty is part of human nature. It’s evolutionary—we’ve always sought ways to enhance our environments, express emotion, and find meaning through visual forms. Even the earliest cave paintings were our first attempts at shaping a sense of place. Whether meant to decorate or communicate, they undeniably enriched the space.

In today’s workplace, art still serves that purpose—but it also does more. Neuroscience shows that viewing artwork stimulates the prefrontal cortex, the brain region involved in focus, planning, and creative problem-solving. It also activates the amygdala, which processes emotional response and strengthens memory.

And beyond cognition, there’s a chemical response: when we see something visually rewarding, something emotionally resonant or aesthetically pleasing, our brain releases dopamine, the “feel-good” neurotransmitter linked to pleasure and motivation. It’s the same reward loop that keeps us scrolling through images on our phones. But what if a thoughtfully placed artwork could offer a more meaningful version of that reward? Instead of reaching for a screen, you might simply look up—and experience a brief moment of clarity, curiosity, or calm.

How can art help create a more inviting, connected workplace, especially in today’s hybrid work culture?

NB:

Hybrid work culture doesn’t naturally support creativity or collaboration. Employees working from home often feel isolated, and it can be difficult to maintain a strong sense of company culture through a screen. That’s why hospitality-based design has become so important in recent years.

People have gotten used to the comfort and convenience of their home, so if we want them to return to the office, we need to create spaces that feel just as inviting. That means incorporating elements like small huddle areas, greenery, layered lighting, soft seating, and even objects like books or personal touches. It’s about blurring the line between residential and commercial, making the workplace feel more human.

Art plays a major role in this shift. Whether it’s a thoughtfully curated gallery wall or textural, unexpected installations, artwork makes spaces feel more welcoming and alive. Creative art placement can spark curiosity, encourage movement, and even shift how people use and interact with a space. In my work, selecting the right pieces and placing them with intention is key to designing environments that inspire people to show up, connect, and collaborate.

In what ways can art be a tool for reinforcing a company’s values or identity?

NB:

As the workplace evolves, companies have had to shift their mindset—not only about how they design their spaces, but also about how they express their values. Today’s employees are looking for environments that feel thoughtful, connected, and aligned with a company’s culture. Art can be a powerful tool in reinforcing that identity—visually communicating what a brand stands for to both employees and clients.

It starts with intention. A company can either purchase generic prints online and fill the walls without much thought—or they can work with an art consultant to make curated decisions that reflect who they are and what they care about. For example, they might choose to support local communities by sourcing from local or emerging artists. They might showcase underrepresented voices by selecting work from minority artists that celebrate cultural diversity. Or they might prioritize sustainability—selecting artworks made from natural materials, working with sustainably certified framers, or finding ways to reuse existing pieces. A thoughtful consultant can help ensure that the entire process—from sourcing to installation—aligns with the company’s values while minimizing waste and unnecessary steps.

As part of my own approach, I make it a priority to attend local art fairs like the Affordable Art Fair, The Other Art Fair in Brooklyn, and the Hamptons Art Fair, as well as pop into smaller exhibitions and pop-ups throughout the city. These events give me the opportunity to connect directly with artists, discover fresh perspectives, and gather inspiration for upcoming projects from the local scene. National and international shows, like Art Basel, are also incredibly energizing—they expand the conversation even further and help build a more diverse, dynamic network of artists from across the country and the world.

CRITICAL THINGS COMPANIES OFTEN OVERLOOK:

1. TIMING

Art is often addressed too late in the process, when the space is already finished or occupied. That can lead to rushed decisions, missed opportunities, or pieces that feel disconnected from the environment. When art is considered early, it can be curated and placed with intention—enhancing the architecture, supporting design elements, and delivering a much more cohesive result.

2. BUDGET

When I ask clients if they have an art budget in mind, 90% of the time they say no. My job is to help them understand and develop one, but that process requires honesty and clarity from the beginning. Without transparency about financial boundaries, we risk spending valuable time and resources on both ends—creating proposals that later have to be scaled down or reworked. Clear expectations lead to a smoother process and better outcomes.

3. ONBOARDING + COMPANY CULTURE

Companies spend significant time and money developing onboarding programs to welcome new hires, communicate values, and foster belonging. But they often overlook how art can support that same goal—visually and emotionally. The right artwork can help new employees understand the culture the moment they walk in. It sets a tone, tells a story, and creates a sense of identity and cohesion. Just as a welcome email or handbook might explain what the company says it stands for, the artwork shows what it feels like to be part of the team.

4. THE IMPACT OF REAL ART

Many companies underestimate the impact of well-chosen, original artwork. Investing in handmade pieces, especially from local artists or creators who reflect the company’s values—adds a level of authenticity and meaning that mass-produced prints can’t match. The textures, the craftsmanship, and the story behind each piece communicate care. That kind of visual experience has the power to energize a space and inspire the people who use it every day.
