If possible, locate your workspace near a window or some source of natural light. Now we know this may not be an option for everyone BUT if you are able, do it! Even if it means working from the dining table for an hour or 2.

Also, don’t be afraid to move. Different tasks require different zones + can signal to your brain the type of task about to take place.

Invest in an ergonomic chair - these are easy to adjust + customize to your height + body size. You are aiming for a 90-degree angle from your hip to knee, knee to ankle.

Thankfully we’ve come a long way since the Aeron chair. There are so many functional + beautiful ergonomic chairs for every budget, so no excuses!

If you prefer movement while you work, a yoga ball can be a great option.

Keep your back away from main corridors + circulation paths.

Why? Well, for one, it doesn’t feel right or safe – I’ll leave it to the Feng Shui masters to elaborate. Second, it keeps roommates + family members from making unwanted surprise guest appearances in your video calls.

In large offices, we are always sure to plan the workstations perpendicular to the main flow of traffic.

Casual is fine! Just not pajamas, please. It’s hard enough to turn off the working brain at home so any signal we can send that separates “office hours” from “home time”, we must.

Many clients like to wear a special blazer, top, or go-to uniform before sitting down at the computer. Again, any way we can signal to our brains the task at hand the easier we will fall into the rhythms.

Many people are on-call 24-7 when they work from home, even though they are not saving lives - turn off alerts, set business hours + schedule meetings within those times.

We have the ability to set the precedent for younger staff. Lead by example!

Schedule video/phone calls with time between to rest/refresh. When you’re in the office you take time to walk to the conference room, say hello to a colleague, use the restroom, or grab coffee- allow yourself the same grace at home.

Remember, no one else is going to create your boundaries for you. Define them + adhere to them.

Unless you are a medical professional, nobody will die if you wait to send that email! A reminder we often need ourselves.
