How we see color (a short refresher)Without light there is no color. But the color we see will be determined by how much of that light + which wavelengths of the spectrum are being bounced off + absorbed. Therefore, what we are seeing is in effect not the color that the object is but rather the color it is not. For example, when we look at a banana, the yellow we see are the wavelengths that are being bounced off or reflected. The banana absorbs wavelengths of most of the blues, reds, violets, greens, + oranges in the spectrum and we are left with the middle wavelength. This part of the spectrum reaches our eyes + is processed by our brain as yellow. So, if color is just the bouncing of light sent through our retina to the various millions of cones + interpreted as “color” in our brains, does color physically exist? OR is it merely a manifestation? While we won’t solve this debate (that has been going on since the 17th century) we are fascinated by the idea that we are all having our very own, unique experience with color.
